What is a Diesel Generator?
By using a diesel engine along with an electric generator, a diesel generator is used to produce electric energy. In the event of power shortages or in areas where there is no connection with the power grid, a diesel generator may be used as an emergency power source.
Industrial or Residential
Generally, industrial generators are massive in size and can generate a lot of power over a long period of time. As the name suggests, in industries where power demand is high, they are usually used. Residential generators, on the other hand, are small in size and provide power up to a particular range. They are suitable for homes, small shops and offices to use.
Air cooled or Water cooled
To provide the cooling role for the generator, air-cooled generators depend on air. No external components are used, except for the air intake system. To achieve this purpose, water-cooled generators depend on water for cooling and consist of a separate system. Generators cooled by water need more maintenance than generators cooled by air.
The range of diesel generators’ power output is very large and can be categorized accordingly. To run power tools or appliances such as ACs, computers, multiple ceiling fans, etc., a 3 kVA diesel generator can be used. They are ideal for use in offices, shops and houses that are small. Whereas a diesel generator of 2000 kVA will be ideal for use in large factories or high power demand locations.
Before purchasing a diesel generator, it is necessary to know the home/enterprise specifications. Generators ranging from 2.5 kVA to more than 2000 kVA can be used, depending on the needs of the region.
For both single phase and three phase connections, diesel generators are available. Find out if your home/company has a single or three-phase connection and choose an appropriate generator accordingly.
One of the most important things to keep in mind when buying a diesel generator is fuel consumption. Find out the generator’s fuel consumption per hour and per kVA (or kW) and also the fuel efficiency it gives with regard to the load.
Control systems and power management systems
The efficiency of the diesel generator is improved by generators with the ability to automatically shift power from the grid to the generator during a power cut and vice versa, show alert (low fuel and other performance issues) along with providing a wide range of analysis data.With regard to load demand, the power management system helps to optimize the fuel consumption and generator efficiency.
Portability and Size
A generator with a collection of wheels or those fitted with fast lifting slots helps to minimize the transport hassle. Also, keep the scale of the generator in mind with respect to the space required to support it.
If the generator is kept in close proximity, high noise emissions may be a concern. In some diesel generators, noise absorption technology is provided, which greatly reduces the noise it produces.
